The home Howell designed for Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil graced the cover of our September 2022 issue. Londonmiminat.comAfter founding her studio in 2018, the British Nigerian designer and artist has taken on ambitious work in locales from England to Nigeria to South Africa. Her elegant, pared-back aesthetic is all-encompassing, with Shodeinde often designing everything in a home down to the tables, chairs, and doorknobs.

Keep the styles mixed - French living rooms have a home for Art Deco design, mid-century and more classical pieces all at once. It’s this layered approach to antiques that keeps things feeling fresh and cool. These white walls provide a simple backdrop against which modern furniture and antique pieces coexist harmoniously, without overwhelming the space.

The Dutch-born, South Africa–raised designer has an unparalleled eye for contrast and a penchant for bold strokes. Her residential projects tell a client’s story in unexpected ways (in Los Angeles, she created a rug using blueprints of the owner’s house). Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson are primarily modernists, yet they’re known for their fearless approach to color and a fashion-conscious sensibility. The room also includes luxury elements like expensive pictures, windows that take up half of the wall, and a gorgeous piano. This home, designed by ECCE Studio, boasts plenty of mismatched seating for easy entertaining, be it casual or dinner party-style. Just as disheveled as they are elegant, French interiors are never too curated or too perfect. New York City–based Roman and Williams courts prestigious clients both old and new, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Facebook.

And Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower are just the tip of the iceberg. France has a unique art style that has influenced millions of artists around the globe. Although your own taste primarily might guide your search, there is a high chance you will also be considering the preferences of others - your partner,  family members such as children, or a client. You most likely also will be deliberating how the object will work with the current furnishings (possibly your relatives' tastes), but also the interior in which it will be placed.

A typical Bergamin project is exuberant and full of life, and the designer’s mastery of the mix has a tropical flair and modernist touches. Pattern play and irreverent finishes are the name of the game at Reath Design. Frances Merrill founded the studio in 2009 and has created warm and inviting interiors that look lived-in from day one. In her toolbox are unexpected colors and a welcome readiness to work with items her clients already own, making her the go-to for every adventurous sentimentalist. Danielle Colding, who came to prominence starring in Shop This Room on HGTV, refers to the homes she creates as artful and cozy. Never stuffy, she likes to build spaces around a client’s family heirlooms, art, and knickknacks so that the room is always a reflection of the individual.

Decorative furniture, light, intense colours and curved forms play a dominant role in several of his projects, rousing a Rococo mood. Joseph Dirand is living proof that timeless elegance comes naturally to the French. Their united creative minds are a force to be reckoned with and blending classic and contemporary styles with neutral colour palettes is their forte. And in my living room, I did tone-on-tone moldings again, but kept the walls alabaster to allow my furnishings to stand out. In our primary bedroom, I went totally girly initially with the pink accent wall and tone-on-tone moldings.

Bedroom furniture made of different kinds of solid wood with carved wood details and soft curves are perfect for French decorating. Baroque bedroom furniture and country bedroom furniture, accessories and lighting fixtures in vintage styles look opulent, charming and elegant. Luxurious wooden beds and soft natural fabrics, a light neutral color palette and graceful floral designs create beautiful, sumptuous and chic bedroom designs.

'In French living rooms, the significance of conversational seating cannot be overstated,' says Fabrice. 'The choice of chairs, along with the arrangement of living room rugs and coffee tables, plays a pivotal role in capturing the essence of the French art of living. 'They had never left the room, and I decided to keep them as they create a bridge between past and future and anchor the space in the timeless wonderment of French chic. 'This creates a canvas that elevates a room’s unique historical ornamentation, allowing the subtle details to shine while harnessing the abundant natural light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The stained wood floor and the vintage chest of drawers serve as a “counter agent” for the rest of the room, which is mostly white.

With this base, introduce upholstered classical furniture in a large-scale toile de Jouy and team with a sleek occasional table for a smart and contemporary layer. For a cool heritage aesthetic, use paint in desaturated muddy colors such as grays and browns which look smart in older properties with panelled woodwork and original moldings. The floor to ceiling windows dominate the space yet the pattern of the fabric on a white background tempers the sharp architectural lines. The design is a reworking of a classic toile, rather than a pastoral scene, it depicts the buildings seen from New York’s Central Park. Such is the versatility of toile it can work in the most avant garde interiors like in this loft apartment pictured.
